Moms: Five Gift Ideas for College Students

The time has come to help your high school grad to pack their things and enter the next phase of their life-no matter how scary it might be. The truth of the matter is it’s often scarier for the parents than it is for the college student.

For the student, it’s a whole new world of possibilities, an adventure, and the time they’ve been waiting for. For the parents, it’s a rush of anxiety and concern over whether or not their child will be safe, happy and prepared. Sometimes it helps to put the parents at ease when we know our kids are as prepared as possible. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of five gift ideas that your college kids will actually need and use.

Cleaning Supplies – that’s right. No more making their beds and doing their dishes for them. They’re on their own now. But what they probably didn’t think to pick up at their late night, last minute shopping spree for their college supplies were cleaning items.
Get them stuff for carpet cleaning Los Angeles style. Make sure they’ve got the basics for the bathroom and kitchen. It won’t be the most exciting present they’ve ever unwrapped but it’s definitely something they’ll need and… hopefully use.

Laptop – this is a no-brainer. They need to be equipped to take advantage of every learning opportunity possible. Giving them a laptop will enable them to get the tools and research the materials necessary to provide them with the education for their future.

Phone – if they can’t make a call to their parents once and a while, how will you know they are safe? Don’t let the opportunity to keep the lines of communication pass you by. Get ‘em a phone and remind them to use it. Not only can they check in on weekends, but they can also use a phone to enhance their college experience to the utmost.

Transportation – maybe you can’t afford a beamer as a going away gift, but you might want to throw them an old car or a bus pass. The easier they can get around, the more likely they’ll be to catch the study groups as well as to come home for a visit now and again.

Food – oh don’t forget the food. College is a time where kids no longer have the comfort of mother’s cooking. Buying a case of Raman noodles and purchasing a pot and pan set will give them a head start to taking care of themselves in the kitchen. Basic items like blenders, pots and pans, crock pots and dishes will help them to eat better and save money instead of hitting the late night drive thru each night.

Sure, some of the stuff on this list might not fit in with the budget and others might be the type of gift that no one dreams of giving; but it’s important to make sure your college student is taken care of. The items on this list will help to take care of them and give them the college experience they’ve always dreamed of and hoped for.
