How to Eat Healthy on a Student's Budget

Back-to-back classes, socializing, extracurriculars, tons of reading and exams. It's all part of college life, and somewhere in there you have to eat. There are usually a lot of handy fast food places around campus, including the campus eatery.

But, what do they offer you? Fried foods slathered with fatty dressings and little to no real veggies. Yeah, it's convenient and cheap, but what if you are one of the many students who would like to be a bit more conscientious about what you're feeding your body?

Fast Food Choices

Avoid Fast Food
You're probably not going to escape the fast food joints. Face it - you just don't have time to avoid them, and when it comes to going out for a quick burger with your buddies, fast food places are way too easy to get to.

This doesn't mean you have to choose the fat-dripping, grease-laden standards. Most fast food places have incorporated salad bars, fruit smoothies, and healthier sandwiches. If you don't want meat at all, you've got a few choices, like Burger King's and Subway's veggie patties, and Mexican bean and veggie burritos.

Making the Most from Your Dorm Room

Most dorm rooms have a little fridge in them, and you can make the most of these on a budget. You can stock your fridge with healthy snacks that are quick, easy, and won't bite into your budget. Plus, dry goods are easy to have on hand if you use one of your many shelves for storage.

You'll have to do a little scouting to see which store has good healthy snacks, but that shouldn't be too time-consuming because grocers, like fast food places, flock to campus areas. And more and more brands are offering healthy, organic alternatives that aren't nearly as expensive as they used to be.

Using TV Time to Get Creative

If you can cook where you live, you have more options. Because most students haven't spent a lot of time cooking, you can get ideas using your TV time. Surf through your Dish Network channels to find cooking programs. There are Dish Network channels totally dedicated to food, and many of these are all about healthy eating on a budget.

You can eat healthy and stay within your budget if you pay attention to your offerings, and do some scouting. Just think of it as an assignment, and you'll be on your way to healthier living in no time!
