The Social Value of Higher Education in America

The Social Value of Higher Education is a priceless asset that serves humankind till it's existence!  I know what you all are thinking now (OMG!! not another wisdom talk).  However, it's human tendency to overlook stuff especially when it comes to understanding our own little world.  To the old & wise, I am sure you know where I am going with this but my real intention/purpose is to spread a little bit of social awareness into the "Generation Next" new breed of college kids.

American Statue of LibertyI know for a fact that today's kids are way smarter (than two minds put together).  But it looks like the word "Social" is left out of the mix and we are left only with- Value (Price) of Higher Education!  This is by no means trying to knock down the young guns of America but rather inspire them to attain knowledge at the highest possible level.  Academics is not just about exploring subject areas; we must also understand how it can help us socially.

I don't know about you, but despite all the technological advances and fake glitterati, our nation is far away from being prosperous (at-least socially).  Just think about all the problems we are facing today (no need to mention them here)!  Think what you want, but the missing element is nothing but the "Lack of Social Value & Integrity in the current academic world".

Education & knowledge go hand in hand, so understanding the difference between them is vital.  Education is simply a process of collecting information about a particular topic, but knowledge is the ability/power to process this information for making a decision.  Being smart or educated isn't enough these days...  The typical sentiment towards higher education is to keep stuffing more information to the brain.  Do you really think this is gonna make us more intelligent?  Is the current learning system helping us to rise above the bad & make this world a better place to live?

Having social value and integrity directly reflects a person's ability to do the right things for the right people.  In other words, education along with righteous morals is what it will take to achieve the well being for every soul on mother earth. Our goal must be to attain higher education along with a social responsibility.

Being responsible for what really matters in life is the true path of success.  Every adult in America want their children to achieve academic success but forgets to send him to the University of Life...  So please make sure that you start application process before it's too late!

Last but not least- Education that arises out of experience is the best of it's kind . The real value of higher education is self-realization.

Concluding with some inspirational quotes:-

-Happiness is probably the only thing in the world that one might not have but can easily give to others!

-The true definition of Success- Opportunity embraced with preparation!  So don’t go telling people about “Good Luck”, such thing doesn’t exist.  Your success depends on your readiness to accept any opportunity that
comes across.

-Being sorry doesn’t mean that you are wrong & someone other is right.  Instead it simply is a way of expressing that the value of our relationship means a lot more than my own egotistical opinion.

How to Relieve Stress When Getting Your Degree

The number of stressful factors that are involved with getting a degree are mind-boggling. The amount of money it costs to finish a degree can be incredibly overwhelming. Figuring out how to make ends meet is something that nearly every college student goes through at some point or other in their college experience. Time management also becomes a skill-set necessity in order to handle the workload assigned from each class.  So how does one master the all-too-important skill of stress relief in their quest for their bachelors?

Stress vs Productivityphoto © 2009 GDS Infographics | more info (via: Wylio)
One of the most stressful aspects of college life is usually the costs involved in paying tuition fees. Those who do their research are those who end up paying the least out of pocket for their education. For instance, start out going to a community college and then transfer your junior or senior year in order to graduate from the prestigious school you were originally accepted to. The diploma looks the same as it would have had all four years been spent at a pricey University but the debt load will be thousands less when it’s all said and done.

Learning to juggle study time with social and personal time is a trick that few have mastered. Those who prioritize their daily tasks and make a to-do list will know exactly what work they need to get done before it’s time to play. It’s always a good rule of thumb to put yourself first (eating, sleeping and emotional needs) then college work, then play. If at the end of the day there’s no time to play, there’s always tomorrow – or the day after graduation.

Investing in quality tools to help you with your education like an up-to-date laptop and relevant software can save time and therefore relieve stress also. Many students argue that they don’t have enough time to seek stress relief. If that is the case, they are doing something wrong. Those who are stressed do not get enough rest and do poorly on exams. On the other hand, those who master the art handling stress in a positive way will develop a life skill that benefit them in every aspect for the rest of their lives. Making wise financial decisions, mastering time management and investing in tools to help you with your assignments can all lead to a less stressful college experience overall.

Study Smarter, Not Longer: Making the Most of Your Study Time

Most college students make the mistake of thinking that succeeding in college is all a matter of numbers: the number of books that you read for each class, the number that you receive as your GPA, and most of all, the number of hours that you spend each week studying. But this is actually only half of the story. Sure, you need to put in several hours of study every week, but it is even more important to make the best use of each of these hours. Here's how to do it:

Kid studying a newspaper
1. Get Rid of Distractions.

Distractions will destroy the efficiency of your study time. It is a fact that you will absorb about half as much information if you have a television playing in the background when you study. Find a peaceful place, like a desk in your room or a nook in the library, and study by yourself.

2. Reduce Noise, and Listen Only to Instrumental Music
Noise is a major distraction while you are studying and can easily break your concentration. If your dorm room or apartment tends to be noisy, don't study there. Every university has a library. Go to the one on your campus and hit the books all by yourself. If you like to have music on while you study, make sure that you choose music that doesn't have any words. It will be difficult to read with another string of language competing for your brain's attention.

3. Make Flash Cards
Flash cards are a great way to memorize facts or vocabulary if you are in a subject that requires this kind of knowledge.  One nice program I found while searching for an easy way to create flashcards is Flash Card Machine. With Flashcards, You will be able to absorb information about three times faster with this method than by simply reading it over and over again. Once you have some of the cards memorized, take them out of the deck and work on the ones that you have the most trouble with.

4. Take Breaks Every Hour

Your brain needs to take breaks every once in a while to remain ultimate efficiency. It is a good idea to take a five minute break at the end of each hour. During your break, try to stand up and stretch your limbs out a bit. Having a small snack is also a good idea.

5. Limit Your Study Time to Three Hour Blocks
Your brain needs a much longer break once you study for three hours. If you take the time to notice, you'll see that you are much more able to pay attention at the beginning of your study time than near the end. Just like all of the other parts of your body, your brain needs to rest after heavy exertion. Plan your study time to fall into three hour blocks throughout your week. If you need to study more than three hours per day, schedule one study period in the morning, and one in the afternoon.

Obama's Education Initiatives: President's Plans for Local Schools

US President Obama makes a statementAfter health care, Obama has planned new initiatives in education reform as well. From early education to college, the president wants to set forth new standards of affordable, quality education that will prepare our country's students to compete with the academic abilities of competitors from around the world. In order to strengthen our economy, says Obama, we need to support our education system. If you want to know how the president's plans will affect local schools, keep reading.

•    Cut wasteful programs: As the president said he wanted to do with health care, Obama wishes to cut wasteful programs that are sucking needed funding from more effective, promising education programs. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has been entrusted with weeding out wasteful programs that drain taxpayer dollars unnecessarily.

•    Increase funding for local schools: WhiteHouse.gov reveals that $77 billion is going to help elementary and secondary schools support quality teachers, improve test scores and academic standards, prepare students for college, and turn around performance in low-achieving schools. This money is being offered to the states through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and would also award $5 billion to early education programs.

•    Raised the bar on graduation and college enrollment standards: Although Alaska and Texas have opted out of the group effort to improve standards that will help students prepare for college, Obama has challenged states to graduate all of their high school students at a level that is ready for college enrollment, by the year 2020.

•    States need to have greater responsibility evaluating and developing charter schools: Obama believes that charter schools are beneficial but also pose some risks to the overall education system in a city or district. He wants states to support the opening of innovative charter schools, but he also wants them to be more aggressive in evaluating the effectiveness of those types of schools. Charter schools that do not meet certain rules or standards should be closed, Obama says.

•    Has left decision-making and curriculum-creation up to state and local officials: While some supporters and protesters of the education initiative believe that Obama's education reform involves too much federal control, there is one area that Obama prefers a laissez-faire approach. While states are accepting the previously mentioned stipend to rework their education systems, they are responsible for setting up new standards, curricula, teaching programs and testing processes that are supposed to improve education. The federal government will have no role in dictating those standards.

•    Offering Early Learning Challenge Grants to states: Early education is a key pillar in Obama's education initiative. In addition to spending $5 billion on new programs for early childhood education, he wants to set up an Early Learning Challenge Grant for states who have demonstrated their commitment to raising the bar even at this young level.

Money for College•    Encouraging states to work together to set common standards for test scores and curricula development: One of Obama's biggest criticisms of George W. Bush's No Child Left Behind program is that there is no consistency among states' standards for academic performance. Because the standards are different across states, students in one state may make the same grade as a student in another state even though they actually possess less knowledge. Obama wants states to work together to come up with a common set of standards, which would theoretically boost the national average of student performance.

•    Call for teachers: Teachers needed to be rewarded more but also given more responsibility, according to Obama. We need to start "treating teachers like the professionals they are while also holding them more accountable," he said in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in March 2009. He has called upon Americans to choose the teaching profession and support a self-sufficient mentoring and education system for teachers that will improve the quality of local schools across the country.

How to Finance College with Less Stress

You thought you could handle working and going to college, but the bills are piling up and you suddenly feel like you’re suffocating in a sea of debt!  You’re worried that by the time you graduate, you may owe some financial institution your first-born child.  You’re beginning to wonder if all of this is really worth it.  What you may not know is that there are all sorts of ways to save money while you’re in school and you can finance college with less stress than you could imagine.

The first thing to consider, if you have not yet started school, is attending a community college to complete your general education.  Let’s face it, GE is pretty much the same no matter where you go.  And this way, you can find a school that’s close to home (so you don’t have to pay for dorms or rent an apartment), and the cost is only a fraction of what you would pay at other colleges or universities for the same fare.

Best of all, if you manage to score a good GPA in community college, it can drastically raise your chances of getting accepted into the school of your choice, as well as earning a scholarship (which, remember, will only be for two years, unlike most applicants, who are seeking a 4-year scholarship).  This also gives you two extra years to look for the university and/or program that fits with your career goals.

There’s nothing worse than spending two years at a pricey school only to realize that they only offer courses in theory rather than the practical program you really wanted.  In terms of getting help paying for school, the first thing you should do is apply for federal financial aid (www.fafsa.ed.gov).  Your allotments are generally based on your parents’ taxes, but if you are emancipated or over the age of twenty-five, you can file on your own behalf and probably get more money.  Every student may not qualify for financial aid and grants depending on the eligibility process.

Planning for tuition costsThere are also a million and one ways to get scholarships.  Start with the ones offered at your school, but be aware that the competition for these can be colossal (as are the chances of receiving them if you don’t have a killer essay or a recommendation from someone on the board).  Instead, try looking on websites that offer scholarships for essays or other creative entries, such as 10k for School.  This site is free and they allow you to customize searches so you can find categories that play to your strengths and interests.  Prizes can range from $50 to $50,000, and every little bit helps.

As a last resort, consider applying for student loans.  This will allow you to work less and focus on your studies, with the added advantage that you often don’t have to start paying them back until you graduate and even then, they tend to carry a lower interest rate than other types of loans.  If you’re feeling stressed about money, student loans can be a good way to reduce the pressure and finance college with less stress, at least for now.
